Attic ventilation for new homes
New homes are being built with vented attics that meet the ventilation requirements of the building code, yet many are experiencing mild to severe moisture problems. People are spending countless hours after the fact trying to figure out how much more venting these roofs need to solve the problem. Maybe the answer isn't venting after all. This session will cover the information necessary to 'design out' the potential for attic moisture problems all while keeping your building inspector happy.

Foam free high performance building enclosures
This presentation is a careful look at how to achieve the highest levels of resilient and sustainable building enclosures while eliminating foam. The growing performance demands of air control, vapor control, thermal control, health and sustainability are examined. Foam insulation, dominant in today’s high-performance marketplace, is increasingly recognized as hindering many of these building performance goals. Practitioners are therefore wanting and finding new solutions that virtually eliminate foam and provide greater performance.

Indoor environmental ergonomics: the human factors in thermal comfort and indoor air quality
One would think an entire industry based on providing comfortable, healthy and safe environments should be able to easily describe how humans actually develop perceptions about indoor spaces. But as strange as it sounds course curriculum and building codes only address, “the hardware” and completely ignore, “the software”, that being the human factors. This program is all about the software and is the missing link connecting bodies to buildings.

Avoid the audit report trap in your sales presentation
You’re smart. You’re certified. And you’ve got that modeling software that spits out charts, tables, and graphs. Now, how do you use these tools and more to help customers understand what their home needs? Many contractors are doing good assessments and making good recommendations, but not helping enough customers move forward to complete the work. One of the key elements in converting more audits to home improvement projects is to help customers understand your findings and their next steps. This session will highlight some of the common audit report pitfalls and discuss ways to make those reports be useful customer education and sales presentation aids. Improvements here can increase your close rates, your average ticket size, and your gross margins.

Join a builder/remodeler, building performance consultant and Wisconsin code expert to discuss the evolution of Wisconsin’s residential construction practices. Throughout the United States energy codes are moving towards higher standards, should Wisconsin follow? With or without code, most agree that high performance homes reduce the operation and maintenance costs for homeowners and is good for business. Yet, the question remains, how do we build more of them? Now’s your chance to hear differences in opinion and share yours. From your perspective: What is the role of energy codes? How do we lower the cost of homeownership while improving minimum standards? How do we get more residential contractors to build better? Join us at this session to weigh in.

Estimating and job costing for profit
Most contractors use the the best guess approach to estimating, then fail to verify how the actual bills came in compared to the estimate. Estimating is a game of exact guessing that must be mastered in order to have business that runs smoothly and then that estimate must be compared to the actual bills line by line. The true goal of estimating is to predict each bill that you will receive for each job. Job and labor categories, accurate scope of work for each trade translates into a lower price to the customer and more money for the company.

Net zero energy part 3: systems
Achieving net zero energy performance is less about equipment specs than you might think, but that doesn’t mean we get to ignore the mechanical systems. We’ll cover the importance of choosing the right consultants and subs, and then how to collaborate with them to optimize the performance of the HVAC, water heating, and renewable energy systems they’re designing and installing. And with buildings that have loads as low as net zero buildings, the integration of these small loads into a single or a reduced-number of separate mechanical devices and systems is key and will be explored.

Residential electricity pricing: now and the not so distant future
Increasing use of distributed resources (energy efficiency, solar PV, batteries, home generators) is causing revenue losses for utilities and they are proposing new pricing systems in response. But the initial designs, which shift cost recovery between volumetric and fixed charges, are only the beginning. The ultimate trend is toward more complex pricing, which itself can create both problems and opportunities for customers and utilities. Understanding the possible pricing trajectories will help builders find the best resource options for customers.

Residential solar power: a look at today and tomorrow
Interest in solar generated electricity has never been higher. The amount of solar capacity continues to grow despite updates to many utility electric rate schedules which reduce energy costs and increase fixed costs. Will this trend continue if state incentives are reduced and federal tax credits eliminated? A frank look at where we are, how we got here, and what the future may hold for residential grid-tied solar energy systems.

Whole home heating and cooling with ductless mini-splits
Ductless mini-splits have been sold in the U.S. since the early 1980s. For the majority of the last few decades, this product type was only considered for niche applications. Recent product additions and changes have allowed this type of product to become mainstream. Being so, it is important that contractors, builders, and architects become more familiar with this option. Attendees will receive information on the latest technologies, available product types, and how it can be applied to heat and/or cool an entire home. In addition, there will also be focus on economical designs, product aesthetics, and efficiency.

Build your business by building better homes
New home construction is all about price, buyers don’t care about quality, comfort, indoor air quality, or energy efficiency. Wrong! They do care, but you need to show them the value. This session shows builders how to use optimization and smart building techniques to market and build new homes that are more comfortable, more durable, healthier, more energy efficient and provide the homeowner more value from the first day they move in. Connected products for new residential construction: the benefits of building smart
Installing connected devices in a home while it is being constructed can greatly reduce installation first costs and eliminate technical barriers that homeowners may experience with self-installation. Working with a HEMS or connected product vendor before the house is built may also give builders the chance to incorporate state-of-the-art appliances that are both energy efficient and connected via a command center model, potentially even streamlining bulk purchasing of equipment. In addition, providing a HEMS in a brand new home could give homeowners more insight into and control over how they use energy.

Radiant slabs: cost effective details for better function and code compliance
Radiant slabs used in new home construction should provide good comfort and efficiency, but are we really
integrating all the details needed to make this happen? Do we just simply add hot water? The slab becomes the distribution system in this case and needs to be completely within the 'thermal boundary' of the home. What details are needed and who makes this happen? In this session we will cover cost effective details for radiant slab heating. We will also touch on the mandatory requirements unique to the Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Code.
