Increasing use of distributed resources (energy efficiency, solar PV, batteries, home generators) is causing revenue losses for utilities and they are proposing new pricing systems in response. But the initial designs, which shift cost recovery between volumetric and fixed charges, are only the beginning. The ultimate trend is toward more complex pricing, which itself can create both problems and opportunities for customers and utilities. Understanding the possible pricing trajectories will help builders find the best resource options for customers.
